A Lyttle Feet Volunteer Shares Her Story.
Volunteer: Jhevonte’ Craigg
Interviewer: Esther Olorunmola
Esther: What motivated you to get involved with Lyttle Feet?
Jhevonte: I was motivated to get involved with Lyttle Feet because I believe every child deserves the basic necessities that can positively impact their development, confidence, and well-being. A pair of shoes may seem like a small thing, but for children in need, it represents comfort, safety, and the ability to participate in school and play without barriers. Lyttle Feet’s mission to provide new shoes to children aligns with my passion for helping others, particularly in making sure that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Knowing that I can contribute to giving children something as simple yet life-changing as a comfortable, supportive pair of shoes inspired me to get involved and help make a difference.
Esther: How did you first hear about Lyttle Feet and its mission?
Jhevonte: I first learned about Lyttle Feet through professional connections and community involvement. Its mission to provide new shoes to children in need really resonated with me, as it highlights the importance of ensuring that every child has access to comfortable, supportive footwear to help them thrive. It’s inspiring to see organizations like Lyttle Feet making a difference in young lives.
Esther: Can you describe your role as a volunteer with Lyttle Feet?
Jhevonte: I play a key role in coordinating and ensuring the smooth execution of our shoe distribution
events. My responsibilities include organizing logistics, overseeing the planning process, and
making sure that all necessary measures are in place to successfully provide shoes to children in need.
Esther: What has been the most rewarding part of volunteering for Lyttle Feet?
Jhevonte: The most rewarding part of volunteering for Lyttle Feet has been seeing the smiles on the
children’s faces when they receive something as simple yet essential as a pair of shoes. Knowing that our efforts directly improve their comfort and well-being is incredibly fulfilling. It’s also been inspiring to witness the positive impact that a small act of kindness can have on an entire community. Being a part of that change and knowing I helped make a difference has truly been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Esther: What kind of preparation goes into organizing a shoe drive or distribution event?
Jhevonte: The first step involves assessing which communities are most in need and determining the required sizes and quantities of shoes. We then source donations through fundraising, partnerships, or direct contributions. Logistics, including the collection, storage, and
transportation of shoes is managed to ensure smooth distribution. The event is planned by
selecting a venue, setting a date, obtaining permits, and organizing volunteers. Promotion is key
to create awareness, done through social media and community outreach. On the day of the
event, we manage setup, ensure efficient distribution, and coordinate volunteers. Afterward, we
review inventory, thank contributors, and evaluate the event for future improvements.
Esther: What challenges do the children face without proper footwear, and how have you seen that impact their daily lives?
Jhevonte: In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, children without proper footwear face several challenges that impact their health, education, and overall well-being. Without adequate shoes, children are more susceptible to injuries, infections, and illnesses caused by walking on rough or unsanitary surfaces. This lack of protection can lead to missed school days, limiting their ability to learn and participate in educational activities.
Additionally, inadequate footwear can affect their self-esteem and social inclusion, as many
children feel embarrassed or left out when they cannot wear proper shoes like their peers.
Through our work at Lyttle Feet, we’ve seen how providing a simple pair of shoes can
significantly improve a child’s confidence, health, and ability to attend school regularly, which
ultimately helps them thrive in their daily lives.
Esther: What skills or qualities do you think are important for someone who wants to volunteer for Lyttle Feet?
Jhevonte: Compassion – A genuine desire to help others, particularly children in need, is essential. Volunteers must be empathetic and driven by a passion for making a difference.
Organization – Since shoe distribution events require logistical planning, being organized and
being able to manage time effectively is crucial.
Teamwork – Volunteers must work well with others, as Lyttle Feet events rely on collaboration between team members and community partners.
Adaptability – Events can sometimes be unpredictable, so being flexible and able to handle
changes or challenges as they arise is important.
Communication – Good communication skills help volunteers engage with children, families,
and other team members to ensure smooth coordination.
Esther: What is the atmosphere like during a typical Lyttle Feet event? Can you describe the energy and emotions?
Jhevonte: The atmosphere during a typical Lyttle Feet shoe distribution event is truly uplifting and filled with joy. There’s an overwhelming sense of excitement as children eagerly anticipate receiving their new shoes. The energy is contagious, with laughter and smiles spreading throughout the crowd. Volunteers are energized and passionate, working together to ensure each child is fitted properly. You can feel the gratitude from the families and the children, which creates an emotional and heartwarming environment. It’s a beautiful blend of happiness, hope, and the sense that something meaningful is happening for these young lives.
